Students and faculty from the University of Hawai'i are aiming to show President George W. Bush that the state of Hawai'i is against war with Iraq. A grassroots coalition made up of the UH Student Caucus, UHPA, Not In Our Name (UH-NION), and the University Peace Initiative has coordinated a letter writing campaign to help citizens voice their opposition to the war. Organizers hope their effort will encourage President Bush to pursue a peaceful resolution to the crisis in Iraq. The coalition plans to present the letters to Senator Dan Inouye in late January so that he may present them to the President.

"We believe that as responsible citizens and residents of the U.S. we are empowered and morally bound to speak up on matters that affect the common good," said Ruth Hsu of the University Peace Initiative.

Coalition members have organized an information table at UH Mānoa‘s Campus Center that will provide information, talking points and sample letters this week between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Coalition members hope this will provide students, faculty, staff, administration and community members an opportunity to have their voices heard.

Participants are asked to submit their letters by Jan. 25 at noon. Letters can be emailed to peacelet@hawaii.edu or deposited at drop boxes labeled "Peace Letters." The boxes are located at:

· Moore Hall 305 (UHM)

· Kuykendall 512 (UHM)

· Hamilton Library Circulation Desk (UHM)

· Campus Center ASUH Office (UHM)

· American Friends Service Committee (2426 Oahu Ave.)

· KOKUA Market (2643 S. King Street)
