UH Student Journalist Wins Prestigious NCAA Scholarship

The NCAA and the Freedom Forum have awarded a $3,000 scholarship to a University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa student journalist.

Stanley K.T. Lee is one of only eight juniors in the nation selected for the one-year, nonrenewable scholarship that is given after a review of the applicants‘ transcripts, articles and letters of recommendation.

About 100 students apply annually for the scholarship, which is designed to foster freedoms of speech and press, while also promoting quality sports journalism education at the collegiate level. The program has given $261,000 in scholarships since starting in 1992.

Lee has been a staff writer for UH Manoa‘s daily student newspaper, Ka Leo O Hawaiʻi, since his freshman year."Since coming to UH, Stanley has always been one of Ka Leo‘s best and most consistent writers," said Ka Leo Faculty Advisor Jay Hartwell. "But what has really impressed me is that Stanley reports because he loves it, not because he wants a job. And he is always looking for new challenges."

Lee came to Manoa from McKinley High, where he was sports editor for the campus newspaper and lettered three years in cross country and track. Last semester, Lee, a double-major in American Studies and Liberal Studies, also coached McKinley‘s cross county team and worked as a sports stringer for The Associated Press.

The seven other award recipients who also will be full-time seniors in the fall attend Northwestern University, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Western Kentucky University, University of Southern California, University of Texas at Austin, University of Iowa, and University of Colorado-Boulder.

The Freedom Forum, which co-sponsors the scholarship with the NCAA, is a nonpartisan, nonprofit foundation dedicated to free press and speech.
