Honolulu Community College is proud to host, in partnership with the Department of Transportation, the 2011 Hawai‘i Construction Career Days on Thursday and Friday, October 20-21, 2011, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Hawai‘i Construction Career Days program provides an opportunity for high school students, grades 9 through 12, to learn about careers in the construction industry through hands-on exposure to heavy equipment, interactive educational exhibits and trade demonstrations.

“This unique opportunity will allow students to experience various construction-related fields with the hopes of sparking an interest leading to the obtainment of a career or technical associate's degree so that they enter a trade with the knowledge needed to be successful in the workplace," explains Michael Barros, dean of Trades and Transportation at Honolulu Community College and board member of Hawai‘i Construction Career Days.

Approximately 1,200 high school students will attend the annual event that spans two-days. Students will participate in hands-on activities from a spectrum of construction-related careers, such as: Engineering, Architecture, Heavy Equipment, Masonry, Carpentry, Plumbing, Sheet Metal Workers, Laborers, Electrical, Taping, Glazing, Roofing, Drywall, and Ceramic Tiling.

Nationally, the average age of workers in the skilled trades is 48. The construction industry needs to attract 240,000 workers each year to replace retiring or departing workers. In Hawai‘i, approximately 9,400 construction workers are needed by the year 2012, with an estimated 1,200 workers annually.
