HONOLULU (October 16, 2012) – Kapi‘olani Community College put its health academic programs on full display today for more than 700 students from 15 O‘ahu high schools at the Health-E Fair 2012. The first event of its kind offered by the college, the Health-E Fair was designed as a new model for student engagement for both Kapi‘olani CC students and visiting high school students.

Kapi‘olani CC students escorted the visiting high school students around the campus through interactive demonstrations and exhibits that showcased the various health academic programs available at the college.

The demonstrations and exhibits were integrated into the course curriculum for Kapi‘olani CC students, and many of the health education students will receive credit for their participation in the event. They were evaluated on their ability to demonstrate their skills and integrate their knowledge in a hands-on and in-person learning environment.

Demonstrations and health screenings provided by the Kapi‘olani CC students included blood pressure, body mass index and stroke assessments; smoking cessation; nutrition; therapeutic massage; CPR and first aid; radiology and x-ray technology; emergency medical services; medical simulation lab; and much more.

In addition to the educational benefits, the visiting high school students had the opportunity to engage with college students as well as Kapi‘olani CC faculty and professionals to learn more about potential careers and how to improve their own health and wellness. Many of the high school students are participants in the Department of Education’s Health Academy program and the Hawai‘i HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) student organization.

Kapi‘olani CC offers associate degree and certificate programs in emergency medical services, dental assisting, exercise and sports science, massage therapy, medical assisting, medical laboratory technology, occupational therapy assisting, pharmacy technician, phlebotomy, physical therapy assisting, radiology technology, respiratory care, and nursing.

The health academic programs at Kapi‘olani CC also benefit from strong relationships with community partners, many of who participated in the event today. Sponsors included Hawai‘i Medical Service Association, Hawai‘i Pacific Health, New Otani Kaimana Beach Hotel, Queen’s Medical Center and Cox Radio Hawai‘i.
