The UH Mānoa Department of Urban and Regional Planning (DURP) and American Planning Association, Hawai‘i Chapter, will celebrate World Town Planning Day 2012 on campus on Friday, November 9. This year’s theme is “Hawai‘i 5-0: Fifty Years of Planning in Hawai‘i.”

A reception will be held from 5-6 p.m. in the DURP Courtyard next to Crawford Hall. Starting at 6 p.m., there will be a panel discussion and an awards ceremony in Crawford 105.

A three-member panel discussion led by Jesse Souki, director of the State of Hawai‘i Office of Planning, will discuss 50 years of major planning issues in Hawai‘i. The panelists are:
  • Waikiki Improvement Association President and former Director of the State Office of Planning Rick Egged.
  • Belt Collins Vice President of Planning Sue Sakai.
  • UH Mānoa Professor Emeritus in Department of Urban and Regional Planning Kem Lowry.
An awards ceremony will honor retired planner John Goody with the Dinell Outstanding Alumni Award, and City and County of Honolulu Department of Planning and Permitting Chief Planner Kathy K. Sokugawa with the Planner Who Made a Difference Award.

World Town Planning Day was started more than 40 years ago by Professor Carlos Maria della Paolera at the University of Buenos Aires, to advance public and professional interest in planning. Now celebrated in more than 30 countries around the world, the day is geared toward a gathering to share lessons, experiences and opportunities for innovations in engaging people and their communities in making cities resilient and livable in a global age.
