This November, UH West O‘ahu will host two events as part of the University’s Sustainability Speaker Series featuring presentations, films and discussions on sustainability related topics. All events are free and open to the public.

“The Restoration of Ancestral Abundance” with MA‘O Organic Farms’ Kamuela Enos, Nov. 13 from 11 a.m. – noon, UH West O‘ahu Campus Center Multipurpose Room C208

UH West O‘ahu kicks off the inaugural event of the University’s Sustainability Speaker Series with MA‘O Organic Farms’ Director of Social Enterprise, Kamuela Enos. His presentation, “The Restoration of Ancestral Abundance,” addresses how ancestral practices provide a codex for modern iterations because these practices took place in great isolation, utilized renewable energy, and were based on having deep relationships.

Born and raised in Wai‘anae, son of Eric Enos, a long-time taro farmer at Ka‘ala Farms, Kamuela Enos serves as the commissioner on President Obama’s Commission on Asian and Pacific Islanders and holds a bachelor’s degree in Hawaiian studies and a master’s degree in urban and regional planning. MA‘O Organic Farms is the largest organic farm on the island of O‘ahu.

“Nā Kupu Mana‘olana – Seeds of Hope” film screening, Nov. 27 from noon – 2 p.m., UH West O‘ahu Campus Center Multipurpose Room C208

UH West O‘ahu will host a film screening of “Nā Kupu Mana‘olana – Seeds of Hope” from Pahoa resident and award-winning film director Danny Miller, and presented by the Hawai‘i Rural Development Council. “Nā Kupu Mana‘olana – Seeds of Hope” originally aired on PBS Hawai‘i and is about Hawai‘i’s return to local and traditional methods of producing food. The film addresses how Hawai‘i’s unique physical isolation and the rising cost of shipping food across vast oceans have created powerful incentives for the people of Hawai‘i to return to the land. A panel discussion will follow the film screening. For more information, visit http://www.seedsofhopethemovie.org/
