The Hawai‘i-based National Disaster Preparedness Training Center (NDPTC) will present a one-day pre-convention workshop focusing on hurricane hazards and resilient building design strategies at the 2014 American Institute of Architects (AIA) National Convention in Chicago, Illinois, on June 25.

Developed by the NDPTC in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at UH Mānoa’s College of Social Sciences, “HURRIPLAN: Resilient Building Design for Coastal Communities" will introduce participants to best practices for community planning and non-residential building design in hurricane-prone regions. Utilizing a hands-on approach, the workshop will also incorporate instructor-led discussions and a design exercise using a hurricane-prone school site in New York City.

Also to be covered will be existing regulations and best practices designed to increase community shelter capacity, while addressing design concerns such as sustainability, accessibility, architectural aesthetics and regional culture.

“HURRIPLAN” was developed by NDPTC and a team of national subject matter experts led by practicing architect Dean Sakamoto, FAIA, LEED AP. Presenting the workshop with Sakamoto will be NDPTC instructors Illya Azaroff, AIA, LEED AP; Michael Lingerfelt, FAIA; and Dennis Hwang, JD, a land-use attorney and coastal geology expert.

“NDPTC’s partnership with AIA and other professional associations will help build resilience through training, education and research on disaster-risk reduction,” said Dr. Karl Kim, executive director of NDPTC.

The workshop, hosted by the AIA Disaster Assistance Committee, is a FEMA-certified training program and is eligible for AIA Continuing Education Units.

The National Disaster Preparedness Training Center (NDPTC) is a member of the National Domestic Preparedness Consortium, which was expanded in 2007 to address all-hazards capabilities by the addition of the University of Hawai‘i. The NDPTC is authorized to develop and deliver training and educational programs related to homeland security and disaster management, with a specific focus on natural hazards, coastal communities and the special needs and opportunities of islands and territories. The NDPTC actively engages internally with FEMA and the University of Hawai‘i, as well as with external partners across the region to integrate the delivery of its trainings, products and services.
