Honolulu CC’s Construction Management Student Chapter receives top honor

(Honolulu) - Honolulu Community College received 1st place honors as the Outstanding Student Chapter in the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) awards ceremony on Tuesday, January 13 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Each year, chapters are recognized for their outstanding achievements in chapter and campus activities, community service projects, fundraising, and other programs.
"The Construction Management students deserve this award," shares Norman Takeya, Assistant Professor of the Construction Management program at Honolulu CC. "They have worked hard in a number of community service projects along with their volunteer work with the Building Industry Association (BIA) of Hawai‘i. They are an awesome bunch of students who do a great job representing the college."
The NAHB Student Chapters program is dedicated to enriching the educational experience of students by offering them first-hand exposure to the real world of the building industry through NAHB membership, educational programming, and networking opportunities.
In a statement, BIA Hawai‘i said: “We are very proud of our student chapter at Honolulu CC and all of their accomplishments. As their local home builders association, BIA Hawai‘i supports the student chapter by providing them with networking opportunities with member companies, connections for potential job opportunities, and valuable resources regarding the home building industry. By building a relationship with students at the community college level, we are enhancing education and career development for future generations of leaders in residential construction and related fields.”
The Student Chapter helped with various community service events throughout the year such as the sustainable tire wall at the Halawa Xeriscape Garden. The students helped to construct a retaining wall from recycled tires to create a more available planting space. The Xeriscape garden is open to the community, teaches water conservation, and exhibits landscaping plants.
The students have volunteered at the Home Building & Remodeling Show in January and the Remodel it Right – GREEN Expo 2014 in September. In March 2014, the students were able to put together two groups of students, first year students and second year students to compete in the BIA Hawai‘i Stew Challenge. Moreover, a few students had the opportunity to attend several BIA Hawai‘i membership luncheons and help with registration for their annual Renaissance Awards Gala in July.
“This has been an amazing honor for the NAHB Student Chapter at Honolulu Community College. Much appreciation goes out to our advisor, Mr. Takeya for pushing us to succeed in our career choice of becoming Construction Managers and to our local NAHB Chapter, BIA Hawai‘i for being a great support to all of our endeavors,” says Honolulu CC Construction Management student and Chapter President, Lalana Moe.
Behind Honolulu CC was University of North Florida in 2nd place and Tarrant County College in 3rd place. The Honolulu CC Student Chapter will be participating in the NAHB Residential Construction Management Competition in Las Vegas, Nevada next week.
