School health aides graduate from retraining program

WHAT:  Graduation ceremony for students in Kapi‘olani Community College’s School Health Aide Level 1 Training Program (a collaboration between the University of Hawai‘i, and the Hawai‘i Departments of Health and Education to retrain school health aides statewide)

WHO:  19 School Health Aides and invited guests

WHEN:   Friday, March 6, 2014 6 p.m. HST

WHERE:  Kapi‘olani Community College Cafeteria (Ōhi‘a Building), 4303 Diamond Head Road

DETAILS:  A collaboration between UH, the Hawai‘i Department of Education and the Hawai‘i Department of Health has created career pathways and a new college-level curriculum for school health aides. 

The State of Hawai‘i Department of Education currently requires a high school diploma, one year of experience working with youth, and certification in first aid for their school health aides.  There are approximately 180,000 students in public schools in Hawai‘i with 255 school health aides statewide.  School health aides have a major impact on health promotion and disease prevention.

On Friday, March 6 at 6 p.m. students of the pilot School Health Aide Level I training program will receive a certificate of competence at Kapi‘olani Community College.
