To celebrate Earth Day, Hawai‘i Music Institute at Windward Community College will host a “Aloha ‘Āina: A Kanikapila for Earth Day” on April 22 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the new Hale A‘o Hawaiian Studies music halau—designed with exceptional acoustics and houses the college’s newly acquired Steinway piano.

Students, faculty, staff and the community are invited to bring an instrument and their voice, and hula, to the new facility to enjoy and promote “malamalama ke Ko‘olaupoko” through music. Refreshments will be provided.

Guest speakers and musicians include Teresa Bright, Ka‘ala Carmack, Mahealani Cypher from Ko‘olaupoko Hawaiian Civic Club and other special guest speakers from the community.

“We want to celebrate the ‘āina with music, in a very informal and traditional style, kanikapila-style,” said music instructor and Hawaii Music Institute director Ka‘ala Carmack. “We will also talk just a little bit about what’s important for sustainability on our Windward side and how it can impact the rest of the island and even beyond.”
