William S. Richardson School of Law Professor Mark A. Levin has been selected as a member of the 2015-16 cohort of outstanding faculty and staff in the President’s Emerging Leaders Program.

This is the fifth cohort in the emerging leaders program that provides professional development opportunities for highly motivated faculty and staff.

The program helps participants gain wide-ranging base knowledge about higher education in general, as well as providing a venue for them to reflect on their personal leadership potential and how they might make a difference within the UH System.

Levin is the fourth member of the Law School faculty and staff to be selected. Previous participants include Associate Deans Denise Antolini, Cynthia Quinn (now Executive Administrator and Secretary to the UH Board of Regents) and Ronette Kawakami.

Levin said it is “a tremendous honor” to be selected for the upcoming program. “It’s exciting to be getting back to school to learn about the university,” he added. “I also look forward to giving back to the school with the assigned project work through the year.”

At the Law School, Levin serves as the Program Chair for Pacific-Asian Legal Studies and as the Deputy Director of the Institute of Asian-Pacific Business Law. His JD is from Yale Law School and his LLM from the University of Washington.

He joined the UH Law School faculty in 1997 from the Law Department of Hokkaido University in Sapporo, Japan, where he was the first non-Japanese faculty member. His interest in Asia Pacific began right out of law school when he worked in international business and financial transactions at Masuda and Ejiri, a leading Tokyo international law firm at the time.

Law Dean Avi Soifer said that Levin continues a strong tradition of outstanding Law School contributions within UH. “Professor Levin’s selection emphasizes that Law School faculty and staff members are prominent not only nationally and internationally, but very much within our own University as well,” Soifer added.
