Hokulea Worldwide Voyage experience to be shared in faculty lecture
University of Hawaiʻi at MānoaLinda Furuto, associate professor of mathematics education at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, presents “Hōkūle‘a Worldwide Voyage: Island Wisdom and Global Connections in Ethnomathematics” on Thursday, October 1, at 11:30 a.m. in Hamilton Library Room 301 as part of the UH Mānoa Faculty Lecture Series.
Hōkūle‘a, our Star of Gladness, began as a vision of reviving the legacy of exploration, courage, reverence and compassion that brought the first Polynesians to the archipelago of Hawai‘i. The mission of the Worldwide Voyage (2013-2017) is to Mālama Honua, care for Island Earth, by bridging ancient and modern wisdom for a more sustainable world.
Furuto will discuss Hōkūle‘a as a vehicle to explore research, theory and praxis, including equitable, high-quality mathematics education that serves to re-empower diverse populations through experiential, real-world applications.
Dr. Linda H.L. Furuto was born and raised in Hau‘ula, O‘ahu. Her research interests include quantitative methodology, mathematics achievement, ethnomathematics and educational access and equity. She is humbled to be engaged in Hōkūle‘a’s Worldwide Voyage from 2013-2017.
