KAPOLEI --- The University of Hawaii – West Oʻahu welcomes two administrators to senior leadership positions at the University.

Dr. Judy Oliveira is now vice chancellor for student affairs and responsible for campus-wide planning and policy formulation and ensuring that student affairs programs, services and activities are aligned with the academic mission and strategic goals of UH West O‘ahu. She was most recently interim vice chancellor for student affairs at the University and was appointed to the permanent position.

Oliveira provides leadership for the delivery and administration of a full-range of student affairs programs including enrollment management, admissions, outreach, academic program advising, student orientation and registration, financial aid, activities, counseling, cultural advising, health and wellness, judicial affairs, first-year experience and retention, and career development. As a member of the university’s senior staff, she is responsible for overseeing the budget and material resources of the Student Affairs department and developing a comprehensive learning environment with a successful program of student retention that complements UH West O‘ahu’s strategic plan for recruitment and enrollment.

“The privilege of serving our students at the University of Hawaiʻi – West Oʻahu brings me great joy because I am able to contribute to their successful growth and development,” said Dr. Judy Oliveira. “I am committed to continuing our collaborative, student-centered initiatives under the leadership of Chancellor Rockne Freitas and now under Dr. Doris Ching. These initiatives are designed to support enrollment and increase graduation rates as well as foster a vibrant, indigenous-serving campus community at UH West Oʻahu.”

Prior to joining UH West O‘ahu, Oliveira served as the interim vice chancellor for student affairs and as TRIO educational talent search director/principal investigator at Windward Community College where she managed five U.S. Department of Education grants, totaling over $4 million dollars, to improve college access and completion for low income, first generation and Native Hawaiian students. Oliveira’s education career began at Maryknoll School where she was a teacher for seven years.

Oliveira holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from UH Mānoa, a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Gonzaga University, and a doctorate degree in educational leadership from the University of Southern California.

Dr. Jacqueline Honda was appointed UH West Oʻahu associate vice chancellor for academic affairs. Honda was promoted to this new role from her previous position as UH West Oʻahu director of institutional effectiveness.

As associate vice chancellor for academic affairs, Honda will assist the vice chancellor for academic affairs in the development and administration of UH West O‘ahu academic programs.

She oversees the campus’ institutional research and assessment, faculty and professional development, as well as curricular and co-curricular program reviews, accreditation, and administrative areas including course scheduling, lecturer and faculty hiring, and other duties.

As director of institutional effectiveness, Honda was responsible for overseeing institutional assessment efforts for academic and co-curricular program outcomes, and leading the institutional research function for UH West Oʻahu. She acted as accreditation liaison officer and played a key role in the University’s successful Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) re-accreditation in 2012.

“I'm excited to become the associate vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Hawaiʻi – West Oʻahu,” said Dr. Jacqueline Honda. “I've worked very hard to assure we were re-accredited, supported student success efforts with data and assessment, and worked collaboratively with faculty, staff and students across academic and student affairs to advance the University’s mission as an indigenous-serving institution. I will continue to create opportunities for the campus to engage collectively in these critical discussions around student success for all UH West Oʻahu students.”

Prior to joining UH West Oʻahu in 2014, Honda was the associate vice president for retention and inclusive student success and director for institutional research, planning and assessment at Humboldt State University. She was also an assistant professor of higher education at UH Mānoa.

Honda has a bachelor’s degree in Japanese from the State University of New York, a master’s degree in Asian pacific liberal arts from the University of San Francisco, a master’s degree in demographics and social analysis, and a doctorate in education from the University of California, Los Angeles.
