The UHM Hui Pookela chapter of Mortar Board was among the outstanding Mortar Board chapters to be recognized with a Silver Torch Award at the national honor society’s 2016 National Conference, held this summer in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The Silver Torch Award recognizes Mortar Board chapters that have made significant accomplishments in the areas of scholarship, leadership and meaningful service to their institutions, in addition to fulfilling all national criteria and deadlines.

Chapter President Lavender Oyadomari was on hand in Indianapolis to receive the national award. "The Hui Pookela Chapter would like to extend a sincere 'mahalo' to Nationals for the Silver Torch Award," she said.  "It will serve as a reminder of the legacy that we have all become a part of, and we are excited to continue to serve our community with aloha."

Mortar Board is the premier national honor society recognizing college seniors for outstanding achievement in scholarship, leadership and service.

The Hui Po’okela chapter was chartered in 1965 and currently has 27 active members.  Dr. Jessica Gasiorek, an assistant professor in Communicology within the College of Arts and Humanities, serves as faculty advisor.
