"It is with heart-felt sadness that the entire University of Hawaiʻi community mourns the passing of former U.S. Senator Hiram Fong. An accomplished and distinguished alumnus of the university, he was a state treasure, and his contributions have not only had a tremendous impact on Hawaiʻi but on the entire nation as he became America‘s first Asian-American U.S. senator.

"The university is grateful to have been gifted in 1998 with his generous contribution to the Hawaiʻi Congressional Papers Collection at Hamilton Library. Numerous documents, photographs, videos and memorabilia were donated to the Collection highlighting the nearly 20 years he served in Congress. The university is honored to house and preserve these important artifacts, perpetuating his legacy and allowing generations to come to learn about this important figure in Hawaiʻi‘s history."
