University of Hawaiʻi‘s Lei Aloha program, a grant-funded program administered by the Department of Educational Technology in the University‘s College of Education, was awarded another grant by the U.S. Department of Education.

Congressman Neil Abercrombie announced a $637,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education to help the University of Hawaiʻi‘s College of Education provide technology training in its teacher preparation outreach programs for Hawaiʻi and U.S.-affiliated Pacific Island jurisdictions.

The grant will provide funding for the period July 1, 2001 to June 30, 2002. It is anticipated that the funding will be maintained for an additional two years. Lei Aloha is currently completing their second year of an implementation grant funded by Preparing Tomorrow‘s Teachers to use Technology (PT3).

The project will develop and offer web-based, video enhanced courses designed to meet the National Educational Technology Standards (NETS) for teachers established by the International Society for Technology in Education. It will also provide teachers with one-on-one consulting, workshops and summer institutes, equipment loans, and software previews and demos.

The program‘s purpose is to prepare future teachers in Hawaii and abroad to infuse technology into their instruction. Technology proficient teachers can effectively help students use technology. Students who are well accustomed to technology have a greater chance of succeeding in today's demanding business environment.
