Professor Paul M. Chandler was conferred the title doctor honoris causa by Rector Meletios-Athanasios K. Dimopoulos of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens for his outstanding contributions to the field of Spanish education after unanimous approval from its Spanish faculty in May. This unique honor is the first for Chandler, and a first for a faculty member in the College of Languages, Linguistics and Literature at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.

“I was honored with a beautiful ceremony as part of the IV International Conference on Ibero-America, which was hosted by the university,” Chandler reflected.

Chandler is chair of the Department of Languages and Literatures of Europe and the Americas, which he joined in 1992. This honorary doctorate is the latest of several prestigious awards he has received throughout a stellar career. Among them are the university’s Presidential Citation for Meritorious Teaching and the Hawaiʻi Association of Language Teachers’ Excellence in Teaching Award. Chandler also earned Fulbright scholarships to Argentina and Paraguay.

Chandler has published, edited and contributed to textbooks, journals, articles and books. He serves on editorial boards for the University of Seville and Ediciones de Orto in Madrid. He has presented papers and workshops at more than 150 venues in over a dozen countries, and has served on boards for the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, the Southwest Conference on Language Teaching and the Hawaiʻi Association of Language Teachers.

This distinct honor from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens acknowledges Chandler’s numerous accomplishments and his impact across the profession.
