The historic decommissioning of UH Hilo’s Hōkū Keʻa Observatory was completed in May 2024, and the area will be monitored over the next three years.
The next phase involves removing the concrete foundations, pavement and underground utilities.
The entire decommissioning process for Caltech Submillimeter Observatory is expected to be completed by 2024.
All individuals working on the project are required to complete cultural training and understand the area’s history and cultural significance.
The star system is incredibly faint and has the least mass of any Milky Way satellite ever found.
Research led by astronomers from the Institute for Astronomy show the event occurred about 160 million light-years from Earth.
The decommissioning of Hōkū Keʻa Observatory is set to begin in March and will take about five months to complete.
The final phase of decommissioning is expected to be completed by summer 2024.
More than 500 college students have participated in the internship program since it launched in 2003.
