| Description: | Matjemosh, ein etwa 30jŠhriger Holzschnitzer aus Amanamkai, fŠllt einen Baum im Busch, schneidet ein StŸck davon ab und fŠhrt es in seinem Einbaum ins Dorf. Dort bohrt er mit einem Grabstock ein Loch durch den Stamm und erweitert es mit brennenden HolzspŠnen. Au§en wird der Stamm mit einer Axt in Sanduhrform gestaltet. Der geschnitzte Griff stellt eine Gottesanbeterin dar.The woodcarver Matjemosh is shown cutting a log from a tree and drilling a hole through it with a digging stick. WIth chips of burning wood the hole is widened and shaped like an hourglass. The outside, too, is fashioned like an hourglass. This, however, is done with the help of an axe and a planing iron. The handle is carved with a small chisel and a knife to represent a praying mantis (wnt), a sacred insect in Asmat iconography symbolizing the ancestor-headhunter. |
