Description: | This program examines the horrific World War II battles of Guadalcanal (1942) and Iwo Jima (1945). The Japanese depended heavily on these two Pacific islands to mount their aggressive air and naval attacks, and the US Armed Forces were called on to wrest these islands from the Japanese. The unusually heavy casualties and suffering in both battles is vividly portrayed. Despite the losses in human life, the US flag still flew at Iwo Jima, inspiring the Marine Memorial there. |
