The UH Mānoa Physics and Astronomy department sponsored a talk by Dr. Carl Wieman (Nobel physicist) on February 4th, 2016.
The title of the talk was “A Scientific Approach to Teaching Science & Engineering” and was very well attended by many members of the community. Dr. Wieman presented evidence of increased learning gains and decreased fail/dropout rates in classrooms where active learning was implemented and compared to traditional lecturing. Active learning techniques can be as simple as using clickers to poll the students and then giving them a chance to discuss in a small group to agree on an answer.
