In September 2023, President Lassner announced that the University of Hawaiʻi is offering scholarships to Lahainaluna High School (LHS) Class of 2024 seniors to attend any of UH’s 10 campuses. Below is a list of Frequently Asked Questions associated with these scholarships.

Who qualifies for the Lahainaluna Class of 2024 Scholarship?

Students eligible for this scholarship include those who were:

  • high school seniors who graduated as part of the Lahainaluna Class of 2024, or
  • who were enrolled at Lahainaluna on August 7, 2023 and then relocated to another high school in the State of Hawaii, and
  • enrolled as a full-time (12+ credits) student at a UH campus starting in Fall 2024

All eligible students were identified and contacted prior to the start of Fall term, 2024.

Do I need to submit a FAFSA or other financial aid application for the Lahainaluna Scholarship?

While a FAFSA is not required to receive this scholarship, students are encouraged to complete a FAFSA, which might be able to provide federal, state and/or institutional aid to support other expenses. Otherwise, there is no separate application for the Lahainaluna Class of 2024 Scholarship.

Can I receive this scholarship if I am attending UH part-time?

Students must maintain full-time (12 or more) credits of enrollment in order to get this scholarship.  If you must drop below full-time enrollment, please contact the campus point of contact listed at the bottom of this page to learn about other resources available to assist you.

Is there financial support available to students from Lahaina who do not qualify as detailed above?

Please reach out to the campus point of contact listed below to see if your campus has any specific resources for students impacted by the fires.  Additionally, all students are encouraged to apply to UH System Common Scholarship application and to complete a FAFSA.

I was a student in the Lahainaluna Class of 2024, but I took a break before starting college. Am I eligible to receive this scholarship if I didn't start college in Fall 2024?

No, Lahainaluna Class of 2024 graduating seniors needed to begin full-time attendance at a UH campus starting in Fall 2024 to receive this scholarship.

What do I have to do to continue receiving this scholarship?

To remain eligible for the scholarship, recipients must remain continuously enrolled as a full-time student at a UH campus, and remain in good academic standing (2.0 or higher cumulative GPA) for subsequent years. Continuous enrollment is determined based on fall and spring semesters only.

How long is the Lahainaluna HS scholarship for?

Students pursuing an associate’s degree may receive the scholarship through Spring 2026, a total of 4 semesters.

Students pursuing a bachelor’s degree may receive the scholarship through Spring 2028, a total of 8 semesters.

Will I be able to transfer my scholarship to another University of Hawaiʻi campus?

Yes. A student who transfers from a UH community college to a UH 4-year university may receive this scholarship for a total of 8 consecutive semesters, ending with Spring 2028.

A student who transfers from a UH 4-year university to a UH community college may receive this scholarship for a total of 4 consecutive semesters, ending with Spring 2026.

A student who transfers from a UH community college to another UH community college may receive this scholarship for a total of 4 consecutive semesters, ending with Spring 2026.

What does this scholarship cover?

The amount of this scholarship is intended to assist with covering tuition, fees and any other expenses associated with the student’s cost of attendance.

How much is the scholarship for?

Due to the differential tuition and fee amounts across the campuses, the scholarship awards for the 2025-2026 academic year are up to:

  • UH Mānoa – $14,000
  • UH Hilo – $9,000
  • UH West O‘ahu – $9,000
  • UH Community College – $5,500

Does this scholarship cover summer school?

No, this scholarship provides awards in the fall and spring semesters only.

How will I receive the scholarship?

Approximately ten days prior to the start of each fall or spring semester, scholarships will automatically be applied to students’ UH accounts and will pay toward tuition and fees charges. Any remaining scholarship balance will be refunded to the student to allow students to cover other cost of attendance items.

Will this scholarship affect other financial aid or scholarships that I already received?

No, this scholarship will not have an impact on any other financial aid or scholarships that students receive.

Can these scholarships be applied to non-credit classes at University of Hawaii campuses?

No, this scholarship is intended to cover attendance in credit classes only.
