Executive Policy EP 5.214, Procedures for Concurrent Registration
Effective Date:  October 2024
Prior Dates Amended:  October 2014, January 2001; February 1987 (est)
Responsible Office:  Office of the Vice President for Academic Strategy
Governing Board of Regents Policy RP 5.214, Student and Credit Transfer within the University
Review Date:  October 2029

I. Purpose

  1. To increase the educational opportunities available to all University of Hawai‘i students by leveraging the Universityʻs full academic portfolio. This will, in turn, facilitate studentsʻ timely graduation while supporting UH transfer pathways.

  2. To establish a procedure to allow for the full and effective utilization of the academic and non-academic resources of the University, especially so that students can meet academic program requirements within a reasonable period of time.

  3. To establish guidelines and procedures under which students may enroll at two or more University of Hawaiʻi campuses in the same semester.

  4. To establish a procedure that allows a class taught at one campus to be made available for student registration at other campuses using cross-campus course sharing (C3S).

II. Definitions

  1. “Concurrent Registration” means registration at a home campus and at one or more other campuses of the University of Hawaiʻi in the same semester, according to the procedures outlined herein.

  2. “Concurrent Registrant” means a student who participates in concurrent registration.

  3. “Home Campus” means the campus at which a student is pursuing a certificate, a diploma, or a degree.

  4. “Cross-campus course sharing (C3S)” means classes that are taught at one campus (offering campus) and are linked and listed at another campus or campuses and available for students at other UH campuses to enroll.

  5. “Offering campus” means the campus where the instructor of record will teach the course.

III. Executive Policy

  1. Students who are enrolled at or admitted to any UH institution will be eligible to register at any of the community colleges without having to apply for admission at the other community college campuses.  Students will be able to take non-restricted courses at the community college campuses for which they qualify (e.g., meet prerequisite, major or other requirements).

  2. Students at any of the four-year UH institutions may register in unrestricted courses at the community colleges.  Community college students may register at other community colleges; however, community college students may not register for courses at the four-year universities unless they have been formally admitted or the class in question is made available to them through cross-campus course sharing.  Likewise, students at one four-year institution may not take regular courses at another four-year institution, unless they have been formally admitted or the class in question is made available to them through C3S.

  3. Cross-campus course sharing (C3S) may occur between or among any of the UH campuses.
    1. From a student perspective, registration for classes shared across campuses follows the standard registration process except that the student will be notified that the course is not being taught at their home campus.

    2. The approval of the offering campus is required for each class included in the C3S.

  4. A concurrent registrant who is a recipient of financial aid must consult with their home campus Financial Aid Office to determine any impact on their financial aid resulting from concurrent enrollment.

  5. An international student who is a concurrent registrant must consult with their home campus advisor regarding U.S. Center of Immigration Services requirements.

  6. A concurrent registrant cannot pursue degrees from more than one campus simultaneously unless under the reverse transfer provision in EP 5.209.

IV. Delegation of Authority

There is no policy specific delegation of authority.
