Gavin Lamb was awarded a Bilinksi Dissertation Fellowship to conduct dissertation research and writing on the topic of “green applied linguistics” – a new sub-field which examines the links between language, people, and the environment. Through studying the ways that tourists, residents, and conservationists communicate in the context of endangered Hawaiian green sea turtles on O‘ahu’s North Shore, he seeks to better understand how conservation can be balanced with people’s interest in wildlife tourism and residents’ rights to use the ocean for recreation. His research aims to inform policymaking in the fields of tourism and conservation.
