COVID-19 DSW Grading Options Spring 2020

BSW Grading Option for Spring 2020

The BSW Program, in accordance with UHM policy, requires that all courses taken for the major be evaluated using letter grades.  This includes Knowledge Base courses, SW core courses and required upper division electives.  In light of the COVID-19 Pandemic and in accordance with UH Executive Policy 5.211, students taking BSW Program Knowledge Base (prerequisite) courses and upper division electives at UHM and/or other UH System campuses during the spring 2020 semester will have the option of utilizing traditional letter grades or transitioning to Credit/No Credit grades.

The minimum threshold for acceptance of Knowledge Base and upper division elective credits by the BSW Program was and remains C or higher.  Because EP 5.211 states the Credit in the Credit/No Credit system represents a letter grade of C or higher the transition to Credit/No Credit for the spring 2020 semester maintains the minimum thresholds and the integrity of BSW Program requirements.

Please note that the acceptance of Credit in Credit/No Credit grading for BSW Knowledge Base courses and upper division electives is for the spring 2020 semester only.  In this way students will be held harmless as they, the UH system, Mānoa, and the BSW Program respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.  Students and advisors should be aware, however, that the minimum GPA of 2.5 and all other programmatic requirements remain unchanged.

MSW Grading Option for Spring 2020

In light of the COVID-19 Pandemic the numerous accommodations have been made at the UH System level. Its emergency grading policy due to Covid-19 pandemic allows students to opt for Credit/No Credit grades in lieu of letter grades. The MSW Program has designed a policy to assure that students are held in “no harm” for the decision to transition from letter grades to a Credit/No Credit system. Specifically:

MSW Specialization Practice and Field Education Grading

Current MSW policy reads that students in their specialization year must earn a B- or higher in Specialization practice and field education courses in order to successfully complete a course.  By UH Mānoa Graduate Division policy a grade of C or better is required for students to receive the Cr grade and earn credits for a given course.

MSW program will allow for a C or higher grade (Credit/No Credit) to be a passing grade for Specialization Practice and Field Education courses (SW 718, 723, 725, 727, and 791) this Spring 2020 semester. Students in their specialization year who opt for CR/No Credit grading and earn CR for a course will be assumed to have satisfactorily met the requirements and passed the course. This is a time-limited policy intended to only cover the Spring 2020 semester, and will be revisited should the pandemic continue into the Summer and Fall 2020 semesters.

MSW Program Admissions

Admissions and Advanced Standing

Current MSW program admission policy reads that students accepted to the MSW Program must have earned a B- or better in all social work courses in order to qualify for advanced standing. MSW Program will allow CR grades to count toward Advanced Standing admission with no penalty. The CR grade will not be held against the student opting for Credit/No Credit in lieu of letter grading. This exception is for the spring 2020 semester only, and will be revisited should the pandemic continue into the Summer and Fall 2020 semesters. The CR grades from Spring 2020 will be acceptable for excess credits, Post-Baccalaureate Unclassified (PBU) credits, and transfer credits.

This policy is applied to applicants from other institutions (outside of UH System).

MSW Specialization Practice and Field Education Grading for Spring 2020 courses:

Under the current MSW policy, students in their Specialization year must earn a grade of B- or higher in their Specialization practice and field education courses in order to fulfill their MSW requirements. By UH Mānoa Graduate Division policy, a grade of C or better is required for students to receive the CR grade and earn credits for a given course.

For Spring 2020, the MSW program will allow a C or higher grade (Credit/No Credit) to be considered a passing grade for Specialization Practice and Field Education courses (SW 718, 723, 725, 727, and 791). Students in their Specialization year who opt for Credit/No Credit grading and earn a CR for a course will have satisfactorily met the requirements of that course. This is a time-limited policy intended to only cover courses taken during the Spring 2020 semester, and will be reassessed for the Summer and Fall 2020 semesters.
