On January 23, 2014 the University of Hawaii Board of Regents (BOR) updated their policy (BOR Policy RP 4.208) to specifically articulate Sustainability as a priority for the institution.
This landmark decision was the first time fundamental institutional priorities have been updated since the Center for Hawaiian Studies was established by the Board of Regents in 1987, thus establishing Hawaiian Studies as a major priority for the university.
Members of the Student Sustainability Coalition of Hawaii coordinated statewide testimony from students, staff, and faculty, and were able to garner resources to fly students out to the Kauai board meeting to testify in support of the university embracing sustainability into its core business practices & strategies.
The board unanimously voted to amend their policy in response to the broad & diverse support demonstrated at this meeting (read meeting minutes here).
