Configuring Thunderbird 10 with IMAP connection for Google@UH Gmail
Note: These instructions were written for Thunderbird 10. If you have another version, the below steps might differ slightly.
Note: Make sure you have enabled IMAP in Google@UH Gmail before you continue, instructions can be found here.
- Select Tools > Account Settings, then look for the Account Actions (lower left corner) and select Add Mail Account...
- In the Name box, type your name as you would like it to appear on email you send. In Email Address box, type your full email address (username@hawaii.edu). Leave the Password box blank, and click Continue.
- Immediately click on Manual config…

- The next screen allows you to type in connection information for the Google@UH mail servers.
Incoming should be set to IMAP.
Sever hostname should be set to imap.gmail.com.
Set SSL to SSL/TLS.
Set Authentication to Normal password.
Change the Incoming server (IMAP) port to 993
Outgoing should be set to SMTP.
Sever hostname should be set to smtp.gmail.com.
Set SSL to SSL/TLS or STARTTLS.
Set Authentication to Normal password.
Change the Outgoing server (SMTP) port number to 465 if using SSL(Note: SMTP port 587 should also work with TLS/STARTTLS).
Username should be your full email address (username@hawaii.edu).

- Click on Create Account.
- Click on OK.
