Google@UH Gmail Thunderbird(PC) setup

Configuring Thunderbird 38 with IMAP connection for Google@UH Gmail

Note: These instructions were written for Thunderbird 38 .  If you have another version, the below steps might differ slightly.
Note: Make sure you have enabled IMAP in Google@UH Gmail before you continue, instructions can be found here.

  1. Launch Thunderbird and set or skip the System Integration pop-up. (Set as Default if you would like Thunderbird to be your default mail client)
  2. On the Welcome to Thunderbird page, click on Skip this and use my existing email.
  3. On Mail Account Setup, enter your First and Last Name, your full email address and password. You may optionally select the box to Remember password, then click on Continue.

  4. Thunderbird should automatically configure the settings as indicated below, click on Done.

  5. A pop-up window for the Web Login Service will open, enter your UH username and password and click on Log In.

  6. On the Mozilla Thunderbird Email would like to: screen, click on Allow.

  7. Thunderbird is now configured, click on Inbox to start downloading emails.


* If on step 3 and 4 Thunderbird does not automatically configure, click on Manual config and enter the following settings.

Incoming should be set to IMAP.
Sever hostname should be set to
Set Authentication to OAuth2.
Change the Incoming server (IMAP) port to 993

Outgoing should be set to SMTP.
Sever hostname should be set to
Set Authentication to OAuth2.
Change the Outgoing server (SMTP) port number to 465 if using SSL(Note: SMTP port 587 should also work with TLS/STARTTLS).
Username should be your full email address (
