“There is clearly a lot of news circulating about changing conference alliances right now. At such times, it is important to appreciate the reality that the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa and the State of Hawai‘i offer many attributes to an athletic conference. UH Mānoa is highly competitive in both academics and athletics and Hawai‘i is a top destination for folks from around the world. Another reality is that our distance from the mainland does pose travel challenges for athletic competitions, but our location is also a major reason Hawai‘i is such a special place. I know all of us treasure this spectacular location and our impressive ohana - living here makes us the envy of so many people and negative comments should not push us to think otherwise.

“In dealing with the current athletic conference issues, Athletics Director Jim Donovan and I are working on solutions that best serve the interests of our University and Hawai‘i - there are always solutions and the people of Hawai‘i have demonstrated many times their ability to find solutions and move forward.  We appreciate your support as we work for that outcome.”
