Mānoa Campus, Moore 258 Add to Calendar

In this talk Dr. Nakamura will discuss the differences in translation of the speech of fictional non-Japanese male and female characters into the Japanese language. While the speech of western women in fiction is typically translated into stereotypical Japanese women’s speech, that of many western male characters is constructed using unique styles to represent non-Japanese men. This talk will discuss the impact of these differences in translation on Japanese language today.
