He's an Astronaut who flew in space; she controlled the Mars Rover.

They are here to meet you and talk about your future in STEM. They are featured at “Reach for the Stars,” a special public event hosted on Wednesday, Dec. 10 from 6pm to 8pm at the Campus Center Ballroom on the UH Manoa campus.

Astronaut Loren W. Acton flew on Space Shuttle Mission STS-51-F in 1985, orbiting the Earth 126 times. Now a research professor at the Montana State University’s Department of Physics, Acton had to train for seven years for his mission aboard the Challenger. He will be a featured speaker at the event.

Engineer Jennifer Trosper from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory was the Surface Operations Mission Manager when Curiosity landed on the Mars, the Red Planet, leading the tactical team that would daily build commands to send to Curiosity. She went on to become the Deputy Project Manager for the entire Curiosity mission.

Professor Monique Chyba from the UH department of Mathematics will also present a joint project with the UH Institute of Astronomy to design spacecraft transfer missions to near Earth asteroids.

The presentations will be followed by STEM activities for the participants, organized and lead by UH students interested in or majoring in education, engineering, physics, mathematics and various other degree fields. Activities will include rockets launching, building Hawaiian compass, flying propellers, one giant leap, and more as well as robotics demonstrations and 3D asteroid simulations demos in the UH Laboratory for Advanced Visualization & Application's CyberCANOE. The event is open to the public, and is free.

Event Sponsor: UH department of Mathematics with support of the College of Engineering, the Institute for Astronomy and the National Science Foundation
