  Frequently Asked Questions

Over the past several months, we have received some excellent feedback from visiters to DLITWeb. Your comments and suggestions have guided the constant evolution of this site. There are several frequently asked questions which have come from the feedback we have received. We list these for you now.

    (Q) Who can enroll in DL classes and programs?

    (A) Any student in the state of Hawai`i who meets campus or program entrance requirements. See our registration page for more details.

    (Q)) What types of DL courses are offered?

    (A) Visit our Course Catalog for a complete listing of Distance Learning classes at the University of Hawai`i.

    (Q) How do I enroll in DL classes?

    (A) Distance Learning courses are available for students at various University of Hawai`i campuses. You must meet all the application and registration deadlines at the campus where you register for these classes. If you are NOT currently a UH Community College student, please contact the campus nearest you. If you are a UH Community College student, you may apply and register for any DE class without going to the DE Home campus. Visit or call the appropriate office on your campus for application and registration information.

    (Q) Where can students participate in DL classes?

    (A) Visit the UH-ITV location page for a listing of 2-way video sites. Cable course shown on Oahu via Olelo cable channel require Oceanic cable television access, viewed on Oceanic Ch. 55 and TCI Ch. 3 (in Hawaii Kai). Other cable channels include:

    • Hoike (Kauai)
      Channel 10 (12, 13) [channel 10 is for univeristy programming]

    • Akaku (Maui)
      channel 13
      Hawaiian channel (Lahina) 50

    • Na Leo O Hawaii (Hilo)
      channel 2

    • Na Leo O Hawaii (Kona)
      channel 7

    (Q) What types of technology are used in the DL programs?

    (A) The university uses a variety of transmission systems to distribute its distance learning programming. These systems are used independently or in conjunction with each other and include: HITS, SkyBridge, Cable TV, Satellites, Dialup Video, The Internet and Multimedia.     (Q) Do I need any special skills to enroll in a DL class?

    (A) No special skills are required of students. Students should be motivated to learn and willing to use technology (such as email) to communicate with other students and instructor to get the most of the learning environment.

    (Q) Are there any "Internet based" DL classes?

    (A) The University has several Internet based courses, with many other classes using the Internet as a component of instruction. See our UH Internet class listing page for more detail.

    (Q) What is the difference between HITS classes and cable classes?

    (A) For HITS classes, students have to go to one of the community college campuses on their island. Communication is live and students must attend at a certain time. With cable classes, students can be at home to watch. Most of the time, classes are not live, so there is no interaction during the class. Interaction occurs via email or phone.
