Understanding the judicial appeals process for military veterans' benefits claims

Law students, military veterans, family members and advocates can learn more about how the judicial appeals process works for veterans' benefits claims at a seminar set for the William S. Richardson School of Law's library.

Coral Wong Pietsche, a federal veterans appeals court judge, will offer her insights from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 2, 2019, at the workshop organized by the Elder Law Program and Elder Law Clinic-Veterans Focus.

Her public talk, “An Update on the Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims (CAVC)," will share the latest about significant recent cases and updates on the appeals process. 

The seminar is designed to help individuals understand this unique court and how to navigate a process that has been called “veteran-friendly,” but is complex.

Judge Pietsch will give an overview of the CAVC, which has exclusive jurisdiction over decisions of the Board of Veterans’ Appeals. The CAVC is part of the federal judiciary system but is independent of the Department of Veterans Affairs.
