Masami Teraoka was born in Onomichi, Japan in 1936. He has a BA from Kwansei Gakuin University, Kobe, 1959, and a BFA, 1964, and MFA, 1968, from Otis Art Institute, Los Angeles. Teraoka received National Endowment for the Arts Individual Artist's Fellowships in 1980 and 1989 and awards from the American Institution of Arts and Letters in 1985 and 1993. In 1994 he was designated Distinguished Alumnus of the Year by Otis Art Institute. He has had numerous solo exhibitions at the Catharine Clark Gallery, San Francisco, and Pamela Auchincloss, New York. Other important solo exhibitions have been at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, Sheboygan, Wisconsin, 2004; San Diego State University, 2001; Frederiks Bastion, Copenhagen, Denmark, 1999; Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, Connecticut, 1998; Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., 1996; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, 1979.
