Higher Tide - The Alabama Water Institute's Journey Towards Advancing Water Research and Technology

by Matthew Womble

Water, the essence of life, presents both essential sustenance and formidable challenges. Recognizing this intricate dynamic, the University of Alabama (UA) established the Alabama Water Institute (AWI) in 2017. Today, AWI serves as a national epicenter for water-related research, innovation, and technology, driven by its core research entities—the Cooperative Institute for Research to Operations in Hydrology (CIROH), Global Water Security Center (GWSC), and CONSERVE Research Group—while benefiting from diverse collaborations, including partnerships with on-campus federal partners from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the U.S. Geological Survey. This presentation will delve into AWI's development and our multi-faceted, interdisciplinary approach to water, highlighting collaborative efforts with federal partners like NOAA to facilitate the transition of research to operations. Furthermore, it will explore opportunities for expanded cross-institutional partnership between UA and the University of Hawai‘i, via CIROH, to address pressing water challenges.
