Transform: Bachelor of Fine Arts Exhibition 2011 is an annual exhibition showcasing independent projects by the graduating BFA students from the Department of Art and Art History, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. The artworks are executed in the areas of ceramics, drawing and painting, electronic arts, fiber, glass, graphic design, photography, printmaking, and sculpture. While completing their own artwork, the students have also planned and prepared all aspects of the production and installation of the exhibition.

The year 2011 marks the hundredth anniversary of the Xinhai Revolution, which saw the abdication of the six-year-old last emperor of the Qing Dynasty and led ultimately to the founding of the Republic of China. This exhibition, which features painting and calligraphy from late nineteenth and early twentieth-century China in the collections of Dr. Ernest and Letah Lee and Dr. Chin-tang Lo, examines the relationship between tradition and modernity in this transitional period. . . .

The University of Hawai‘i Art Gallery in collaboration with the University of Hawai‘i Library presents work by celebrated, prolific American author and artist Edward Gorey (1925–2000), revered for his distinctly elegant, enigmatic, and eerie black and white illustrations. This exhibition features over 700 books, book jackets, prints, posters, drawings, postcards, handmade dolls, and other ephemera from the John A. Carollo - Edward Gorey Collection in the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa Library’s Special Research Collections, with special loans courtesy of The Edward Gorey Charitable Trust, New York City and the Edward Gorey House, Yarmouthport, Massachusetts.

Features 18 contemporary Korean artists who were specially selected to highlight the historical dynamism of modern Korea. The artists experienced Korea’s turbulent history from authoritarian military regimes through the dramatic democratization and flourishing industrial development of its formative years. Their work, which reflects on the past but incorporates contemporary exchange with the global art community, has received international recognition.

Experience the beauty and artistry of China’s most renowned Jingju actor in this exhibition. Mei Lanfang is recognized as the first to introduce Jingju to America.
His most famous roles were those of female characters and his skillful portrayal of women won
him international acclaim. The exhibit will be comprised of historical photographs, stunning ornaments,
costumes and weaponry from some of his best-known performances, as well as displays of a variety of
media from Mei Lanfang’s 50-year stage career.

Since first conferring of Bachelor of Arts degrees in 1923, the Department of Art and Art History, over the past 85 years, has had many alumni contribute locally, nationally, and globally to the development of visual arts and the communities they live in.
