"Field Notes on Chinese Indie Cinema"

Abstract: Despite institutional and financial challenges, independent filmmakers are creating some of the most socially engaged, formally innovative and diverse films made in China today. In this talk based on my summer research trip, I share my thoughts and observations on the indie film culture in China. I will provide context to the continued struggle on the part of indie filmmakers and organizers to sustain an independent cultural space, discuss the diversity of films being produced, and speculate about the future.

About the speaker: Yun Peng is Assistant Professor at the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at University of Hawai’i at Manoa. She received a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from University of Minnesota. Her research interests include modern Chinese literature, Chinese cinema, literary criticism, and film theory. Her current work focuses on contemporary Chinese documentary and independent films.
