Announcing the following public talk, part of the Center for Chinese Studies at UHM's China Research Seminars series:
"The Situation across the Taiwan Strait: Challenges and Opportunities for China and the United States"
by Li Peng, Gao Herong, Chen Xiancai, and Huang Rihan, Graduate Institute for Taiwan Studies, Xiamen University
Abstract: The Chinese government has always believed that the Taiwan issue is the most important and sensitive core issue in China–U.S. relations. It is not only related to China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, but it also involves the national sentiments of the 1.3 billion Chinese people. Since President Tsai Ing-wen of Taiwan came to power in 2016, the situation in the Taiwan Strait has become complicated and severe. The political relationship between the two sides of the Strait is deadlocked. The security situation in the Taiwan Strait is on track to become tense. The cross-Strait foreign-related struggle has become fiercer, and civil exchanges have also been affected. After the Trump administration labeled China as a “strategic competitor,†the challenges facing China and the United States on the Taiwan issue far outweigh the opportunities, and its potential dangers are far greater than those of other issues.
