Relearning Southeast Asia: Fieldschool

February 7, 3:00pm - 4:30pm
Mānoa Campus, Online Add to Calendar

Southeast Asia as a region and field of study has been historically shaped by the Western intellectual tradition of knowledge construction. As the first session in this webinar series on decolonizing Southeast Asian Studies, we look at learning and relearning Southeast Asia through the lens of students from the region. A panel of three University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa graduate students from Malaysia, Brunei, and Timor-Leste will reflect on how their field school experience enables them to have a newfound appreciation of the region as both ‘insiders’ and ‘outsiders,’ facilitates a relearning of historical and contemporary connections that transcend borders, and has reshaped their own research plans.
