“Menglong Poetry (朦胧诗):
Chinese Lyrics after the Cultural Revolutionâ€
Richard Trappl studied in Beijing through the years 1974 to 1975 and hence witnessed the
end of the Cultural Revolution. During that time, he worked in a People’s Commune and in
a steel factory. He came to know personally most of the poets of the time, especially Bei Dao
(北岛), Gu Cheng (顾城), Shu Ting (舒婷), and Yang Lian (æ¨ç‚¼). His lecture will introduce
and interpret their poetry both from the perspective of literary history and aesthetics, and
from his personal knowledge of the poets.
