National Coming Out Day Celebration; NO H8 in the 808 T-shirt Give-away!
October 11, 10:00am - 2:00pmMānoa Campus, Campus Center
UH MÄnoa LBGT Student Services invites the community to join together for “No Hate in the 808,†on National Coming Out Day, Thursday, October 11, 10:00 am-2:00pm at Campus Center, University of Hawai‘i at MÄnoa campus.
This year, we are initiating a campus-wide community art project and are asking for donations of new and used t-shirts of any size or color. Your contributions will be used to make a "NO H8 in the 808" quilt that will celebrate lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex equality. T-shirts can be dropped off at LGBT Student Services/Women's Center (QLC 211) or Native Hawaiian Student Services (QLC 104).
“NO H8 in the 808!â€: National Coming Out Day celebration highlights:
· LGBT Community Resource Fair: This special celebration of tolerance and acceptance is aimed at highlighting Hawai‘i support to end bullying and build equality for LBGT people. More than 20 community organizations, churches, service agencies, and advocacy groups will share their resources for creating a climate where lesbian, bisexual, gay and transgender youth are accorded dignity and respect for who they are.
· 8th Annual Amazing Ally T-shirt Day Give-away: “NO H8 in the 808†t-shirts will be distributed to everyone who wants to “wear their support†for LGBT equality—all day, all across campus.
· NO H8 in the 808 Quilt Project: decorate a panel for a quilt that will celebrate LGBT equality.
· NO H8 in the 808 Video Project: record a sound bite proclaiming your love for diversity and equality.
· Public address and proclamation by Governor Neil Abercrombie, 12:30 pm in Campus Center
As a special highlight, there will be the making of a “community quilt,†where participants will have the opportunity to decorate mural-like panels with messages of love for diversity and support for LBGT equality.
The community quilt will be displayed on campus as a visible reminder of Hawai‘i’s support for “No Hate in the 808.â€
“No Hate in the 808†will feature activity booths, music, our annual t-shirt giveaway, and a lot of fun, including keynote remarks by several community leaders, students, and Governor Neil Abercrombie.
“No Hate in the 808†coincides with National Coming Out Day. Facilitated by an international consortium of human rights groups, the event was begun in 1987 as a means to increase the visibility of LBGT people and provide individuals encouragement for fully celebrating all aspects of who they are
