Hawai’i Institute for Human Rights along with its community and campus partners invite the public to see four of the most exciting and engaging films covering the imminent and important issues in our islands and the international affairs.
The films selected for the 4th Annual Honolulu Human Rights Film Festival are highlights of the prestigious Human Rights Watch London and New York Festivals that will be premiered on Oahu March 2 – 3 at the University of Hawai’’i at Manoa Dean Hall at 6 p.m. Admission is free.
The films covering important issues at the United Nations including women's rights, globalization and peace.
“Return to Homs†will kick off the film festival featuring an intimate portrait of a group of young revolutionaries in the city of Homs in Syria. The film won the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize for Documentary Film at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. The second film shown will be “Scheherazade’s Diary†focusing on women inmates through a 10-month drama therapy/theater project set up in a prison in Lebanon. The third film is “Sepideh: Reaching for the Stars†focusing a young Iranian woman daring to dream of a future as an astronaut. The final film is “Big Men†revealing the secretive worlds of both corporations and local communities in Nigeria and Ghana.
