J. Stapleton Roy’s career in the U.S. Department of State spanned 45 years during which he served as U.S. Ambassador to China, Singapore and Indonesia. In 1996, he achieved the highest rank in the Foreign Service when he was promoted to “Career Ambassador.†In 2001, Ambassador Roy joined Kissinger Associates, Inc. a strategic consulting firm, as managing director. He has also served as director of the Kissinger Institute on China and the United States at the Woodrow Wilson Center for Scholars. “China’s Foreign Policyâ€
David M. Lampton is Hyman Professor and Director of SAIS-China and China Studies at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. Formerly president of the National Committee on United States-China Relations (1988-1997), he is the author of several books, including: Following the Leader: Ruling China, from Deng Xiaoping to Xi Jinping, (University of California Press, 2014). He serves as chairman of the Asia Foundation and on the board of the executive committee of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations. In 2015, he was named the most influential China watcher by the Institute of International Relations at the China Foreign Affairs University in Beijing. “U.S.-China Relationsâ€
Robert Daly is director of the Kissinger Institute on China and the United States at the Woodrow Wilson Center. Prior to that, he worked at the University of Maryland and was American director of the Johns Hopkins University-Nanjing University Center for Chinese and American Studies in Nanjing, China for six years. Mr. Daly served as a cultural exchanges officer at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing in the late 1980s and early 1990s. After leaving the Foreign Service he taught Chinese at Cornell University; worked on television and theater projects in China; and as a commentator for CNN, the Voice of America, and on Chinese television and radio. He lived in China for 11 years and has served as interpreter for leaders such as Jiang Zemin, Yu Zhengsheng, Li Yuanchao, Jimmy Carter, Henry Kissinger, and Zbignew Brzezinsk.
The program starts at 6:00 pm, preceded by light refreshments at 5:30 pm.
