“Dolphin Whistles as Communication Signals”

Acoustic communication through whistles is well developed in dolphins. Dolphins are presumed to use whistles to maintain group cohesion and to broadcast identity, thus being important signals in determining dolphin social structure. To answer the question on how dolphins are using whistles, our research group has recorded the whistles and activities of wild and captive bottlenose dolphins, finding that the whistle repertoire depends on one side to the individual dolphin, and on the other to the activities dolphins do. More needs still to be investigated to learn how dolphins communicate using whistles.
