The Changing Face of Diplomacy: A Britsh View

Many current strategic foreign policy challenges are reminiscent of those we have faced for decades: dealing with terrorism and instability; negotiating global agreements on trade and other issues. But today, technology and public expectations are changing both the tools and the context, enabling and requiring real time engagement with the public at home and around the world. And with foreign policy less exclusively the preserve of governments, diplomats now often work in partnership -- not only with other diplomats -- but with NGOs, foundations and other influencers. Chris O'Connor has been the British Consul General in Los Angeles since August 2013. He represents the UK government in Southern California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Hawaii and US Pacific Territories. He promotes trade and investment, scientific cooperation, creative and media collaborations and educational partnerships between the UK and the southwestern United States. He also oversees delivery of essential consular services to a 600,000-strong British resident community and British visitors numbering over a million per year.
