United States-India Relations: The Road Ahead

Ambassador Richard R. Verma will present a review of U.S.-India relations and cooperation during a year of active interchange highlighted by President Obama’s January visit to New Delhi and Prime Minister Modi’s upcoming September visit to the U.N. and Silicon Valley.
Ambassador Verma previously served as Assistant Secretary of State for Legislative Affairs in the Obama Administration, leading the department’s efforts on Capitol Hill, where he had worked as Senior National Security Advisor to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and for Chairman of the House Defense Appropriations Committee Jack Murtha. He is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, where he served on active duty as a Judge Advocate. His military decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal and Air Force Commendation Medal. His distinguished career in the private sector, as partner at Steptoe & Johnson LLP and as Senior Counselor to the Albright Stonebridge Group, focused on international law and regulatory issues, with a specialization in Asia and emerging markets. In 2008, he was appointed to the Prevention of Weapons of Mass Destruction and Terrorism Commission and co-authored its landmark report, "World at Risk." The Ambassador is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, served on the Secretary of State’s Foreign Affairs Policy Board from 2011-2014, and was ranked by India Abroad as one of the 50 most influential Indian Americans. He holds degrees from the Georgetown University Law Center (LLM), American University's Washington College of Law (JD), and Lehigh University (BS).
