In the 1990s, the Soviet Union collapsed, and the archives opened up to researchers from all over the world. For the first time, it was possible to answer many questions about Soviet life and state policies. At the same time, the economic crisis in the country affected the archives and their archivists: salaries were not paid, electricity was cut off, and ordinary people faced new and terrible pressures. Prof. Wendy Goldman has worked in Soviet and Russian archives since 1984. Today, she discusses the archives as a door into a once-secret past and a window on the challenging present.
