WRRC Spring Seminar Series

February 19, 3:00pm - 4:00pm
Mānoa Campus, Pacific Ocean Science and Technology (POST) 126

Development of modeling-based decision support tools for managing impacts of climate change and invasive species on tropical forest watersheds.

Christian P. Giardina, PhD, Research Ecologist, Forest Service, Institute of Pacific Islands Forestry, Hilo, Hawaii.

Dr. Christian will share results of his study on 87 watersheds in the Island of Hawaii using Distributed Hydrology Vegetation Soils Model (DHSVM). Various scenarios of climate changes and expanding invasive species cover were carried out in the study to estimate possible future effects on stream flow. Dr. Christian will also demonstrate how the DHSVM-based analyses were used to develop a structured decision support tool designed to increase the adaptive capacity of human infrastructure and of targeted ecosystems to absorb climate change through enhanced management.
