Aloha Ai/na: Relationships of Land and Literature, Food and Amphibians with Dr. Leilani Basham

Associate Professor of Hawaiian Pacific Studies Leilani Basham will explore the relationships between “ai” and “aina” and their myriad meanings, including ʻai, ai, aina, and ʻāina. Specifically, this analysis will be grounded in the moʻolelo (histories, literatures) relating to four moʻo akua (amphibian, reptile deities) from the island of Oʻahu.

Nazi Appropriation of Aloha in Klaus Mehnert’s The XXth Century with Dr. Alan Rosenfeld

Associate Professor of History Alan Rosenfeld will discuss the rhetorical strategies at play in the Nazi wartime magazine The XXth Century, produced by former University of Hawai‘i professor Klaus Mehnert in Japanese-occupied Shanghai.
