Fostering a Sense of Place & Community in Virtual Classrooms

Drawing on the importance of place is a powerful educational tool regardless of discipline or educational level. By recognizing the significance of cultural, historical, ecological and spiritual ties to landscape, learning becomes authentic and meaningful. Often, students gain a sense of—or connection or attachment to— place and community when physically visiting a site. However, this has not always been feasible (e.g., due to limited class time or large class sizes), and is particularly daunting under COVID-19, when most of us are teaching in a “virtual” classroom.

Please join us for an interactive workshop to discuss ways of bringing place and community into our (mostly virtual) classrooms. A panel of three Manoa faculty will share approaches and strategies, and participants will have the opportunity to explore ideas for their own courses in small group breakout rooms.
