Since the re-emergence of Hawaiian sovereign claims in the late 20th century, the University of Hawaiʻi has been a site of contention. Drawing from their essays in a recent book, A Nation Rising: Hawaiian Movements for Life, Land and Sovereignty, Kūhiō Vogeler and Kekailoa Perry share biographical and autobiographical perspectives on how movements for Hawaiian liberation and independence have intersected with this university. Ed Greevy, principal photographer for the book, will also discuss his documentation of earlier struggles that preceded and in some cases led to articulations of Hawaiian sovereignty.
